History Major

The Graduate Record Examination (General Test) is not required for admission to the program.
This program is offered on the non-thesis option only. A minimum of 12 hours of 6000-level is required for non-thesis plans. Degree candidates will submit a portfolio, a record of academic and professional preparation, to complete their degree.
The MA in History, delivered entirely through the online distance learning format, exposes students to a variety of historical topics and periods from a global perspective. This innovative degree provides training in historical interpretation and issues that is suitable for a variety of careers and emphasizes methodologies and content valuable for in-service teachers. Students will benefit from the History Department’s close academic mentorship as all classes are taught by UNI faculty. The program is fully online with all classes taught in the evening, one course at a time, in synchronous and asynchronous formats, making it convenient for both full-time students and working professionals.

Note: M.A. students must maintain a total major GPA of at least 3.0. If a student falls below the required 3.0 GPA, they will no longer be eligible to receive funding and can potentially be dismissed from the program. Students who enter the program on a probationary basis (a GPA under 3.0) must earn a total major GPA of at least 3.0 by the end of their first semester in the program.

History Graduate Student Learning Goals:
- GSLG 1 Critical Thinking: Graduates will acquire research and investigative skills that will encourage the thoughtful and continuing study of history and its dissemination.
- GSLG 2 Communication: Graduates will demonstrate an advanced mastery of the basic methods of historical interpretation and its dissemination through an oral presentation of a portfolio that represents a body of scholarly work.
- GSLG 3 Program Content Knowledge: Graduates will enhance and deepen their content knowledge of history from a global perspective through the successful completion of four seminars and four workshops.
History Graduate Student Learning Outcomes:
SLG 1: Critical Thinking (Correlates to GSLG 1 Critical Thinking):
- Graduates in the M.A. in History program will show a mastery of the basic methods of historical knowledge through active participation in online class (both synchronous and asynchronous) discussions/discussion boards and the successful completion of all assignments (quizzes, exams, papers and/or projects).
SLG 2: Communication (Correlates to GSLG 2 Communication):
- Graduates in the M.A. in History program will demonstrate an advanced mastery of the basic methods of historical interpretation and its dissemination through an oral presentation of a portfolio that represents a body of scholarly work.
SLG 3: Program Content Knowledge (Correlates to GSLG 3 Program Content Knowledge):
